Members of the Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) work together to define the necessary functional components and standards – as well as gaps in standards – which must be resolved to enable the interoperability of healthcare data. Standards developing organizations (SDOs) and consortia with HIT expertise have a key role to play in this process.
HITSP does not itself engage in standards development. Rather, Panel members work together to identify voluntary consensus standards that enable and support widespread interoperability among healthcare information technology, and analyze how those standards can work together to accomplish key work areas – or Use Cases – identified by the American Heath Information Community (AHIC).
